After reading around 57 books and articles, travelling to the other side of the world and becoming a hermit for a few months in order to think and write, I managed to finish my Masters dissertation and hand it in a few days ago. I never thought I would ever do a degree when I was younger, let alone a Master's degree. I enjoyed studying very much but it seemed to take up all my time and energy.
Although my Master's was in music (ethnomusicology) , doing it seemed to be mainly about reading and writing words, learning new languages etc... and being a hermit.
I might return to study but for now I can go back to doing creative things like music and writing again.
I have been invited to do another gig in Leipzig (Germany) and a workshop in a couple of weeks which is very exciting.
The concert on Friday 12th of October will be to celebrate the first year of the GREEN FIELDS STUDIO a vibrant new arts and perfomance space (website http://studiogreenfields.wordpress.com).
On the 12th there will be an entire day of performances, from live art, to music and other strange and interesting events. It is part of the Lindenau Festival happening in Leipzig, which is a very "happening" place with many opportunities for artists and creative people.
Then on the Saturday or Sunday I will be running another workshop in singing Tembang Cianjuran, a complex and beautiful type of singing from West Java, which I have been studying as part of my degree and Kawih songs which are similar but easier to sing.
If you are not German but would like to come to these events there are some very cheap flights available to Leipzig Airport from Stansted Airport (London) and everyone is welcome. Leipzig is a cheap place to visit and very beautiful, but bring a winter coat and a hat!
I decided on a set list today and it will include: Prozac, Come Live with Me, Thelma and Louise, Kirsty's Song, Night Sky, and (if they can supply me with various types of electronic equipment) Song of the Western Islet. There may be some other songs but since Song of the Western Islet is around 15 minutes long, the set list is longer than it seems.
For the Tembang Cianjuran and Kawih workshop the repertoire will vary according to who is there but it will be songs such as Sekar Manis, Es Lilin, Mupu Kembang, Soropongan, Daweung or perhaps others. If you want to hear some Tembang Cianjuran here is a link on youtube to a rendition of Mupu Kembang.
At present I am only able to teach some of the singing as I am still learning the kacapi zither and cannot transport it easily from one country to another.
Anyway must go, please send me your comments and if you can't make the gig, you can always buy an album or book me for a gig at a place closer to where you live. I am also available to compose songs and other types of weird music, or other musical services for a modest fee.
Love and Peace
( It feels weird writing this without adding a Bibliography, referencing academics and having half a dozen appendices and footnotes..oh hang on this is a footnote)
( here is another footnote...freedom is not always your friend...more on that later.....)
